What Does Islam Mean to You?

Assalaamu-alaikum, Islam is, to me, a solution to all my problems and a solution to all of your problems. Whatever the nature of the problems that you face Islam has a solution. This is because Islam is more than just spiritual, it is practical. Islam is a complete system of life. Islam has a financial system, an education system, a government system and a legal system. And then again it has a social system and it also covers the spiritual aspects of your life. This system of Islam is the best possible system for us since it has been designed by Allah, our Creator, and since He created us He knows best what is good for us and what is bad for us and what is the ideal system for us to live our lives under. It is only this system of Islam that can comprehensively solve the problems of the world e.g. famine, homelessness, crime, oppression and brutality. Islam can solve the problems of the Third World countries.

Islamic Fundamentalism
"Two Israeli soldiers wounded in suicide attack by fudamentalist Muslim". "Islamic Fundamentalists in Egypt bomb hotel". "Muslim fundamentalists cause chaos in Kashmir". These are common statements found in the everyday newspaper. They describe events that give the impression that this religion of Islam, the only religion before Allah, is a deen of violence, anarchy, and non-reason. You might also notice that each statement contains the combonation of Islamic or Muslim "fundamentalist(s)". So the reader of such statements is lead to believe that a "Muslim fundamentalist" is prone to be a violent, rash, unsympathetic, and unreasonable person. But I say to you now that we, all who follow al-Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad(SAWS), we all should be "fundamentalists". You see, a "fundamentalist" is someone who believes in "fundamentalism". And when we look in the dictionary under the word "fundamentalism", we find: "a movement or point of view marked by rigid adherence to fundamental or basic principles". It is based on this definition that I say that we should be "fundamentalists", because the true definition of a Muslim fundamentalist is one who adheres to the basic principles of Islam:

  1. Shahada: Acknowledging that there is nothing deserving of worship except the One True God, Who in the Arabic language is called Allah; and bearing equal witness that Muhammad ibn Abdullah(SAWS) is His Slave-servant and Messenger.
  2. Salat: Which is to make the five daily prayers required of the Believer.
  3. Zakat: Which is alms-giving or charity to people in need.
  4. Sawm: Which is to fast in the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calender, called Ramadan.
  5. Hajj: Which is to make the journey to the Sacred House in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
I include with those five pillars, adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah. Together, all ofthese are the basic principles of Islam.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, we must not be afraid of being labled a "fundamentalist", because if we are labled so, then we know that we are doing our duty as Believers. But if we are not openely testifying there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger, then we are not fundamentalists. If we are not making our prayers five times a day every day, then we are not fundamentalists. If we are not paying zakat, then we are not fundamentalists. Ifwe are not fasting in Ramadan, then we are not fundamentalists. If we have not made Hajj andhave no intention of doing so, then we are not fundamentalists. If we are not adhering to the Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, then we are not fundamentalists. And if we are not fundamentalists, then we are not Muslims. Islam is submission to Allah. This submission begins in the Name of Allah, The compasionate, the merciful. Compassion which is a condition of the heart is inseperable from mercy which is anact of compassion. The First verse that follows will be the praise and thanks to Allah, which willbe grasped throughout the message of the Quran, in every condition. So in submission to Allah, it is ever and ever Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil Aalameen, i.e.The Praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Fareed at fdeb@kingsley.co.za

In the new South Africa, under Nelson Mandela, Muslims were also appointed to the cabinet of Ruling Ministers. Their remarkable contributionis the Islamic concept of unity in diversity, thatin submission to one Allah, we can all live together in peace and in our diverse ways build South Africa. Peace and Reconciliationis the first endeavour of the new governement. But,like some people claim that there can be no peacewithout justice and there can be no justice without Submission to Allah, Islam.
